Terri Schiavo....

WHY WON'T YOU DIE?

As per usual, the christian conservatives are making a spectactular ass of themselves...all in the name of the "right to life" line in the constitution. Funny how they somehow forget to mention this when they're talking about the death penalty. So help me, if this isn't a blatant backdoor attempt to find a way around Roe v. Wade, I don't know what is. On the other hand, you can't say that this is pandering to public opinion, considering that 80% of the population is against them. Whatever. I want Alan Alda as my President....as he said last night: "I'll answer any question about government policy. But if you want to ask me a question about religious beliefs....go to church." That man should win in a landslide.

(stagehand whispers in Mike's ear)

Fictional character?

In any case, the supreme court just turned down her parent's appeal, so short of Governor Jebby calling in the National Guard**** to storm the hopsital, it looks like time is running out. Let the poor woman die with dignity. It's time.

Goddamn Republicans. Cracker-ass crackers.

****I hope he actually does try this, only to find out the entire Florida National Guard is deployed somewhere outside Tikrit. Now THAT would be funny.

The Chief expands Mike's record collection (volume 2)

In our first episode, we discussed Richard Ashcroft and the Verve

Today, we have those wee lads from Scotland, who supported oasis on their big world tours in 1997 and 2000: Dougie, Fran, Neil and Andy: Travis.

As background, here's the intro paragraph again.

As I might have mentioned at some point in the past, I'm an oasis fan. A rather big oasis fan, no less. As such, I have a tendency to try and find interviews with the members of the band...and since Liam generally isn't capable of stringing together thoughts of more than 2 words at a time, and Gem and Andy (and in the past, Guigsy and Bonehead) both seem quite content to fade into the background, the interviews are normally done with the brains of the operation: Noel Gallagher. Now Noel, besides being one of the funniest men in rock'n roll, is also rather opinionated when it comes to discussing other musicians. Now, what's interesting about that, is that he's been asked his opinion about pretty much every band that's ever existed, since those chimps in suits (also known as the music press) know that whatever he says is generally good copy. Why this is interesting is that without fail, if he says he likes a band, I will too. Which is strange, because this corollary doesn't work with any of my other musical heroes...I can't stand listening to most of the crap Dylan talks about...Weller has rather....eclectic tastes, and I have no idea what McCartney likes, and that's probably a good thing these days.

So when I hear Noel say something like "the new Ed Harcourt single is ace...so much so I'll probably have to nick half of it"...I'll go in search of said song and 99% of the time...I like it.

So, there you go. Now we come to Travis. The first album I purchased of theirs was of course 'The Man Who', basically on the back of Noel pumping them up and having heard "why does it always rain on me?" and "driftwood" at Glastonbury. I walk out of the store and on the videoscreen in the athlete's world next door, they're showing the video for 'why does it always rain on me?"....good sign. So I put it on, and immediately fall in love with it. Just a beautiful album from beginning to end....and then there's a hidden track at the end...'blue flashing light', which they always play live.

Next on the agenda was the first album 'good feeling', which was a bit more rocky than the second one. Not quite up to the standards of 'the man who', but tracks like U16 Girls and All I wanna do is rock made it a classic.

The third album, which I bought on the day of release was 'the invisible band', which included one of my all-time favoutite songs 'sing'....just an absolute belter of a tune. Plus, a few other good 'uns, and it's a nice little album.

Then Fran (the main songwriter) got political and everything went to hell. "12 Memories", their last album, is dreadful. So much so, it's put me off them for a long time. Very, very disappointing.

Such is life. 2 or 3 good to great albums, then you lose the plot.

A little space, a little time...

...see what you can do. The sun will sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeine on you again, a bell will ring inside your head, see what you can do.

We're SURE this is the guy from Heavy Stereo, right? He's written two songs since he's been in oasis, one that rips off the stooges 'no fun', but was mega live, and this "a bell will ring" which is gonna be on the new album. They played it twice at Glastonbury and Poole, and I've only heard dodgy recordings, so I've been iffy on it...heard an upgrade today, and it sounds killer. Way to go, Gemmy.

70 more days to the album of the century.

Random ramblings

I don't like linking to anything (normally), but this is this week's installment ofPeter King's MMQB My first thought, and the first thought of anyone who hates the Pats is NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mainly because of my Ahab theory rule: if a team says their stated intent for the season to beat another team, and not to win the championship, they're screwed. So all that money Robert Irsay is sinking into the Colts offense is gonna be for nowt this year. Oh well, maybe they can hire Jon Gruden after he gets fired by the Bucs this year, and he'll win the super bowl next year. Sucks to be Tony Dungy, the Buck Showalter of the NFL.

Ian Brown got arrested last week. Apparently after bitching about the sound at the venue in San Francisco, he said "let's finish the show and smash the place up"....shortly thereafter a guy got onstage and rugby tackled him. The band and King Monkey then proceeded to beat the guy and a security guard up. Now, I was at the show in New York City and he was bitching about the sound there, too. Hey, Ian: maybe it's you.

Got U2 tickets on the weekend. Yay, only 8 months away! Talk about planning your life away...and here I was thinking 3 months to oasis was a long time.

I was correct on 7 of the sweet 16. I still have 3 of the 4 final four picks still alive, which is an average year for me.
